The software used for conversion is InkscapeTM, which uses the W3C open standard SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) as its native format, and is free and open-source software. The procedure has, however, been applied to all point symbols regardless of their utility. Within each PDF, not all symbols are needed on geological maps, and some symbols are not points. As the process is designed to create point symbols, there is no need to download lines, such as State Location Maps, or patterns and colours. For QGIS users the simplest method for converting the FGDC postscript files to SVG files is by downloading their PDF. This standard is also useful for a wider audience Worldwide where no other map symbology standard has been established. Their objective is to aid in the production of geological maps and related products, as well as to help provide geological maps and products that are more consistent in both their appearance and their underlying database content. The Geologic Data Subcommittee (GDS) of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) is responsible for coordination of geologic data-related activities.
